Installing Mods – (2) Installing the Mods

Now that we have Minecraft Forge installed to a profile on Minecraft, we’re ready to install the actual mods. I assume you already have some mods picked out. If not, you can find some popular mods at Curse Forge HERE. I’ll be installing Tinkers’ Construct for this tutorial. If you’d like to follow along with me, you can find Tinkers’ Construct on Curse Forge HERE. Mods will be downloaded as a .jar file. Tinkers’ Construct also includes another mod called Mantle. Mantle can be found HERE. Be sure you download the correct version of the mod for the version of Minecraft you’re using. You can find other versions by clicking the Other Downloads button on the Curse Forge page of your mod.

After downloading the jar files for the mods you’d like to install, you must put them in your Minecraft’s mods folder. Where is your mods folder you may ask? Well, it depends on how you installed Minecraft Forge in the previous lesson.

Forge Installer (show/hide)

Since the Forge Installer is compatible with several operating systems, the location of your Minecraft mods folder will depend on your operating system.

(Be sure to replace with your username.

MultiMC (show/hide)

To get to your Minecraft folder in MultiMC, open it and right click on your Forge instance followed by “instance folder”. Once the folder opens, navigate into the Minecraft folder and then into the mods folder. This is where you should put your .jar file.

That’s all there is to it! Once your mod’s jar file is in your mods folder, you’ve successfully installed your mod! Now, I’d recommend you launch Minecraft after you install each mod to ensure that it has been installed correctly. How do you check if your mod installed correctly? Well, start by launching Minecraft and wait for it to load to the main menu. Then click on the “mods” button.

Clicking that button will show a list of your installed mods on the left. You may see other mods listed in addition to the ones you’ve added. These are just the default mods for Minecraft Forge. As you can see highlighted below, the mod list shows that I have both Tinkers’ Construct as well as Mantle installed.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed your first Minecraft mod(s)! At this point, you could start playing with your new mod, but there might be some things you’d like to change. Most mods have configuration files that you can edit. In the next lesson, I’ll be explaining how to customize your mods configuration files to make them work how you’d like.
